Week of October 7th-11th

Week of: October 7th, 2013
Weekly Academics:
Ø  Reading-Literary: Students are continuing to analyze characters in a variety of ways using texts on their individual levels. We’ll be working in groups to make posters for the characters in the books we’re reading in our guided reading groups.
Ø  Standards:
§  ELACC2RL3: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
§  ELACC2RL7: Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Ø  Vocabulary: Character trait, characterization, dialogue
Ø  Writing: We’re continuing writing informational/explanatory texts. Students are still creating their own non-fiction books.
Ø  Standards:
·       ELACC2W2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Ø  Vocabulary: non-fiction, text features
Ø  Math: We’re continuing with our unit on addition and subtraction. Students are practicing fluency in addition and subtraction facts. We’re also analyzing the relationship between addition and subtraction as we look at fact families and more challenging addition and subtraction equations.
Ø   Standards:
§  MCC.2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Ø  Vocabulary: sum, difference
Ø  Science: We’re currently not working on any new standards for science as we focus on our social studies unit. During this time we’re reviewing information we learned during the states of matter unit.
Ø  Standards:
Ø  S2P1: Students will investigate the properties of matter and changes that occur in objects.
·       A. Identify the three common states of matter as solid, liquid, or gas.
·       B. Investigate changes in objects by tearing, dissolving, melting, squeezing, etc.
Ø  Social Studies: Location: We’re continuing to investigate rules and responsibilities and analyze the ways rules and responsibilities affect our everyday lives. We’re reading Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss and discussing the way rules, laws, and responsibility are demonstrated in the text.
Ø  Standards:
§  SS2CG1: The student will define the concept of government and the need for rules and laws.
Important Dates and Information:
  • First and third grade is taking the CogAT and ITBS tests this week and for the next 2 weeks. Our schedule will be altered slightly due to testing, but our students are NOT taking these tests. Please remind students to encourage their friends and siblings in other grades at this time and show them respect by being quiet in the hallway during testing.
Homework:
·      Practice you reading 20 min everyday. Be sure to record reading at least 4 days per week.
·      Country research information due Wednesday, October 16th.



Countries Research Project
To increase your knowledge as global citizens, you will be completing a research project about a French-speaking country. Select a French-speaking country of your choice to research at home with your parents. Please use the attached notes sheets to guide your research. All information recorded should be written in the your own words. This information will be used for an in-class non-fiction writing activity in which you will make a brochure for the country you researched. All research is due in class Wednesday, October 16.

You can choose 5 of the 6 categories to research:
·      Population and People
·      Native Foods
·      Important Cities
·      Music and Dances
·      Climate and Land
·      Flag (describe what the flag looks like and its meaning)
Everyone must complete the general information section, other important and interesting facts, and draw/color the flag.
Books and websites can be used to find information. Please record ALL sources on the Citing References paper.
