F.I.S.H. Folder
Week of December 2, 2013
Weekly Academics:
Ø Reading Centers: Students will continue reading folktales with
their guided reading groups on their reading levels. They will look for
characteristics of folktales in their books, as well as retell the stories
using the elements of literature (characters, setting, problem, solution).
Ø Students should know
that fables are usually short stories with talking animals as characters.
These characters learn a lesson, or moral, by the end of the fable
Ø Writing Workshop: Students will continue writing a personal
narrative. They have chosen topics that are meaningful to them. They have
also written strong leads to grab their readers’ attention. Now they are
working on telling the story in small steps and adding details to bring the
story to life.
Ø Word Work: In groups, students will be guided to discover
the pattern in their new word sorts. Working together, they will sort the words
into categories. They
will also continue to learn 6 new high frequency words. Rainbow letters,
(Monday) Read and copy (Tuesday) Word search (Wednesday) partner word search
and more (Thursday) and sentence writing or paragraph writing (Friday).
Ø Grammar Skill: Students will work on writing verbs in past,
present, and future tense.
Ø CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.7
Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital
text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Ø CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.4a
Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
Ø CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.4b
Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression
on successive readings.
Ø CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.2
Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and
determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
Ø CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.5

beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
Ø CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.3
Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short
sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and
feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of
closure.
Ø Math: Students will take a pretest on measuring length and
time. They will work in centers this
week to explore measurement in inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and
millimeters.
Ø
CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.A.1 Measure the length of an
object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks,
meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Ø
CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.A.2 Measure the length of an
object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two
measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the
unit chosen
Ø Science: S2E2- Students will investigate the position of sun and
moon to show patterns throughout the year. They will make a sundial to
explore how the length of shadows changes throughout the day. They will
relate the lengths of days and nights to the changing seasons. They will
observe and record the shape of the moon for a month.
